WhatsApp pertama kali memperkenalkan enkripsi end-to-end untuk melindungi backup chat pada tahun 2021. Saat diluncurkan fitur ini mendukung penguncian backup chat menggunakan password atau kunci enkripsi berisi 64 karakter. Namun yang jadi masalahnya, pengguna harus mengingat password yang rumit atau menyimpan kunci enkripsi saat memulihkan chat WhatsApp. Kini dengan passkey, pengguna tidak perlu menghapal password karena chat backup bisa diakses dengan sidik jari, wajah, atau kode penguncian layar.
