The Future of Telehealth.org with Doxy.me I appreciate the gracious introduction from Dr. Marlene Maheu , and I’m equally excited about this new partnership. I have deep respect for Marlene’s leadership and the legacy she has built over the years. A trailblazer in telehealth, Marlene was leading this industry well before it was cool, and it is truly an honor that she has entrusted us to carry forward her work with Telehealth.org. For a bit of background, I created doxy.me in 2013 while working on a prenatal care study as a PhD student in Biomedical Informatics at the University of Utah. The study required a simple, free telehealth solution for expectant mothers to meet with their obstetricians from home—a need that, at the time, had no viable solution. I believed telehealth should be accessible to all, without cost or complexity as barriers, which led to the creation of doxy.me. Initially, clinicians and patients appreciated doxy.me’s simplicity and ease of use, with some suggestions for improvement along the way. By the time I graduated in 2014, doxy.me was ready for public release, though we still considered it a side project as I began my career as an assistant professor at the Medical University of South Carolina. Surprisingly, clinicians started sharing doxy.me with colleagues, and its popularity grew organically. During this early phase, Marlene took notice of doxy.me and included it in Telehealth.org’s listing of telehealth video providers, as the only option offering a free service. This visibility sparked a friendly connection with Marlene and brought consistent traffic our way, further driving doxy.me’s growth. Fast forward nearly a decade and through the COVID-19 pandemic, doxy.me has grown into a global leader in telehealth, serving over 1 million healthcare professionals and facilitating more than 400 million provider-patient sessions, totaling over 10 billion minutes of telehealth interactions. Today, I have the privilege of leading doxy.me as its CEO. When I first envisioned doxy.me, I hoped that a free, easy-to-use video solution would help overcome major barriers to telehealth. While this has been largely true, I’ve realized that substantial challenges still exist—ones that technology alone can’t solve. This insight led me to partner with Dr. Aditi Joshi , a seasoned telehealth consultant, to author Telehealth Success: How to Thrive in the New Age of Remote Care . Our goal was to provide a practical guide to help healthcare professionals navigate the complexities of telehealth across five key domains: patient success, clinician success, technology success, financial success, and compliance success. Though the book offers a comprehensive roadmap, I recognized the need for a living resource to keep up with the rapid changes in telehealth, one that healthcare professionals could rely on without the time commitment of reading a full book. Serendipitously, when I reconnected with Marlene earlier this year, she expressed an interest in scaling back her involvement at Telehealth.org. The timing was perfect—Telehealth.org offered the ideal complement to our book, providing an established platform we knew could deliver lasting impact to the industry. We have a deep respect for what Marlene has built, and our aim is to not only preserve but expand Telehealth.org’s offerings. This includes its high-quality content , continuing education courses , and consulting services , while broadening the reach across specialties and regions. While doxy.me now owns Telehealth.org, we’re committed to running it as an independent entity, with Aditi appointed as Executive Director to lead its vision and strategy. Revenue generated by Telehealth.org will remain within the organization to support its growth and expand its educational impact.
